This Fire

The grass was greener through these hills
before the drought
before the war

The music was softer, too, wasn’t it?
through winding roads
through intertwined fingers
the weight of joy
heavy as an x-ray cover
over our bodies

I find myself again through these hills
the ones that have browned
wondering if there will be rain
wondering if I’ll get burned
playing in this fire
